(I). UNIQUE forestry and land use GmbH:
IREN and UNIQUE forestry and land use GmbH are looking back on many years of successful partnership.
Having started with scoping visits and feasibility studies on forest rehabilitation IREN and UNIQUE now have a prosperous partnership, shown through regular cooperation, join implementation of activities and most recently the constant representative office of UNIQUE forestry in IREN. While the office itself is still under development one German staff is working as link between the two partner as full time position in Hue city. In recent years IREN and UNIQUE were working on a number of different activities such as:

♦ The joint implementation of a project on developing business models to address drivers of deforestation and forest degradation in central Vietnam, financed through the German Ministry of Environments International Climate Initiative. Part of this still ongoing project were a number of technical studies, the development of pilot sites and training courses on Integrated Forest Management for different forest owners from Hue Province. This also lead to publishing a English and Vietnamese book on lessons learnt and guidance developed throughout the project.

♦ Under this project, and for future cooperation, IREN, UNIQUE and the Hue Department of Agriculture and Rural Development signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen the ties between different provincial and international actors in order to support forest development in Hue Province.

♦ UNIQUE and IREN staff were working together on a number of different other activities, such as:

► Development of two feasibility studies on Water Management and Coastal Protection in the Mekong Delta for a join cooperation project between the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation, implemented through the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Interantionale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. Those studies intend to guide Vietnamese ministires and international project to sustainably and efficiently invest into development activities in the Mekong Delta
►Development of Sustainable Forest Management training courses for employees of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, improving state management capacities in Sustainable Forest Management

♦ Just recently IREN and UNIQUE won large multi-year project financed through the German Ministry of Environment. While currently under development of the final project implementation approach, this multi year project will focus on the restauration and rehabilitation of sand-dunes along the coast of Northern-Central Vietnam.

♦ Additional to the joint cooperation activities UNIQUE forestry and land use is supporting the World Banks Forest Caron Partnership Facility in the development of a Emission Reduction Programme for the 6 Provinces in Northern Central Vietnam. Besides this UNIQUE is supporting GIZ and MARD in the implementation of a joint cooperation programme on Forests and Biodiverstiy. As an international company UNIQUE just recently started activities in Laos, supporting GIZ and the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in the development of three Provincial REDD+ Action Plans (PRAPs).

♦ With UNIQUEs strong technical and international experiences and IRENs in country network and technical background this thriving partnership has been steadily growing over the last years. And with different proposals, project ideas and recent developments in Vietnam it is expected to continue growing over the coming years.
